Project: My Farmhouse Table

One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well
- Virginia Woof

Everything in our house happens at the dinning room table. In our new house we ditched the idea of a formal and informal dinning area {cause we are not the 'formal' type} and opted to have a special space we eat all our meals at. Together, as a family. So when it came to choosing our family dining room table, I did A TON of homework. Keeping with the theme {well back then, lack there of}I found a table I loved - from none other than Pottery Barn – but didn’t like the price tag. So I set out to make my own. I found a simple {well I thought they looked simple at the time}plans from one of my DIY heroes Anna White. Find my original plans here

Here are a few pictures from the build process.

A few more. Please excuse the attire. I was working people!

You can see here that everyone makes mistakes. But they are easy to fix {insert wedge here}! Note: How cute is my Bug {adorable little girl in picture}. She is now my little helper.

HUGE project, but it was awesome. I love the final results and it complements the cottage-shabby chic look I was going for! The chairs {in the photo) I refinished with a flat white, distressed, stained and sealed. The table was stained in a Traditional America stain and white washed (very cool trick). Hope you are inspired!

Note: My blue buffet table in the back was one of my first pieces I refinished. It was an ugly green, but had potential. I painted it Tiffany’s blue {fitting eh?}!

Your Junk. My Treasure. #DIY Done Right. {Part 1}

They say one man's junk is another man's treasure. Well in this case, the donated goods of Jr. League of Columbia is my DIY dream come true. I stopped by the Cantey Building at The State Fair Grounds earlier today while the ladies of Jr. League set up for this year's Clean Sweep event - taking place Saturday, February 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The Clean Sweep is a one-day rummage sale, which features new and used household and children's items at affordable prices. All of the proceeds support the Junior League of Columbia’s community projects and initiatives.

Here's a sneak peak of what I found and my DIY vision for each piece.

The Chair

What is it?  Solid wood chair with padded seat {$10}.
#DIY Tip: I would refinish this chair in a color of your choosing. Distress the piece to give it an aged look with a little stain to finish it off. Then re-cover the seat with an awesome print or burlap for a natural look that goes with anything. You could use your new fabulous chair in a nook, dinning room, casual sitting area - really anywhere you need a chair.
Difficulty: For the more advanced DIYer.

The Headboard

What is it?  Piece of wood fencing {$15}
#DIY Tip: One of my favorite finds of the day. This would be prefect as a headboard for a twin or double bed. You wouldn't have to do much to this piece, maybe a quick touch up of white paint. You could also easily distress it to give it that 'shaby-chic' look. Overall probably the cheapest and most creative headboard you will find.
Difficulty: Easy-Peasy.

For Entertainment

What is it?  Wood napkin rings {8 for $3}
#DIY Tip: Spray paint the wooden rings with chalkboard paint {my favorite go-to DIY solution}. When you have guests over, write their name on the ring and slide it onto your napkin of choice. Perfect for dinner parties and eliminates the need for seating cards.
Difficulty: Really, really easy.

The Area Rug

What is it?  A curtain panel {$8}.
#DIY Tip: Cut the fabric to fit the size space you are trying to fill. In this case you could use it for a large room or even a hall runner - heck you could use it outside. Sew the edges if need be. Then using a roller paint brush, spread Minwax polycrylic sealer over the fabric. Once it is dry, place a rug gripper found at any home improvement store underneath it. And VoilĂ ! Best thing about it, you can throw it in your washer and dryer if it gets dirty.  I am so in love with this piece, I wanted it for myself.
Difficulty: Easy, but sewing skills needed.

The Media Stand

What is it? Solid wood buffet table{$75}.
#DIY Tip: This piece would be perfect for a media stand {hold your TV, components, photos, random junk, etc}. I would refinish the piece completely and possibly change the hardware to your liking. You have two options when it comes to staging: 1)You could remove the drawers, insert wood and use those spaces to hold your DVR, DVD player, etc and buy fabulous baskets to fill the bottom space. 2) You could keep the drawers for remotes and other random items, use the top shelves for components and baskets on the bottom. Either way, you could stage and style this piece to look just like it came out of a Pottery Barn catalog. But this piece might only cost you $150 finished!
Difficulty: Advanced DIYers.

Chic Bar Stools

What is it? Wooden Bar Stools{$6 each}.
#DIY Tip: Give them a light sand, spray paint them the color of your choice. Then to give them an added pop of awesomeness, dip them in gold paint. It's much easier than it sounds. Using painters tape mark off about 1/4 of the way up on the stool. Spray paint a metallic gold or silver paint, remove the tape immediately to avoid nasty paint dripping and let dry. It will add that unique sense of style and give you that  expensive look. You could use them at a bar, in the office or even in the corner of a room that needs filling.
Difficulty: Easy-Peasy.

Candle Lantern

What is it? Wooden Bird Feeder {$5}.
#DIY Tip: Lanterns are all the rage these days and selling for $100s of dollars in retail stores. This one is easy. Remove the center piece - it comes right out - and replace it with a candle. A flameless candle would be ideal so you can leave it 'burning' and not worry about setting fire to the house. The color and distressing is already perfect. You could use the piece on a mantel, next to the fireplace, on a patio table....anywhere.
Difficulty: Easy-Peasy.

 Wall of Frames

What is it? Tables and Tables full of old picture frames {$2-$10}
#DIY Tip: Do you admire those beautiful photo walls you've seen on Pinterest? Well here is an easy way to make your own. Buy 8-10 random size photo frames. Look for ones that have unique detailing to them. Spray paint them white, gold, black, etc and fill them with your favorite photos. Then hang them. You can do them up a staircase, over the couch, or even in a hallway. There are many tips online on how to arrange.
Difficulty: Pretty-Easy, but you will need a good leveler.

 Display Board

What is it? Frame with a stand ($5).
#DIY Tip: This is cute in general, but I LOVE it as an chalkboard display. Spray paint the glass with chalkboard paint and insert. You can use it when entertaining to label the food or table numbers. Or you can write sweet messages on it to your friends and family in the living room or kitchen. Endless opportunities with this one!
Difficulty: Easy.

The New Wine Charm

What is it? Wine Glasses with Colored Ribbon ($3 each).
#DIY Tip: Take the colorful bows out and replace them with burlap or even twine. You can tie small wooden chalkboard labels to the bows and write names on them. They would be adorable for entertaining with friend - I want them, so fingers cross they are still there when I go back on Saturday.
Difficulty: Easy-Peasy.

This is just part of the awesome finds from Junior League Columbia Clean Sweep. I will post more soon......

The Power of Spray Paint

This weekend I worked on several projects, including helping a first time DIYer with a piece of furniture. Photos coming soon...

I found this beauty at my office. It has been sitting in a corner for months and I asked if anyone would mind if I took it home. After getting laughed at, I threw it in my car with 'a vision'.  It took me about 15 minutes to take the shade off and spray paint the base a flat white. After it dried.....Bam! Awesome new lamp for my living room. Even the husband liked it.

So don't discard someone else's trash, turn it into your treasure. And most of all NEVER underestimate the power of spray paint.

FREE Fonts that ROCK!

I love making my own wall art, invitations, etc. So you can imagine how excited I was to find a site that offers FREE unique handwriting fonts!

Fonts for Peas offers more than 500 of the cutest and most unique handwriting fonts on the 'net! They even take your submitted handwriting samples and turn them into fonts you can download for FREE! Seriously, this was like Christmas morning to me.

I used a few of their awesome fonts for my newly redecorate hall where I showcased 'handwritten' {yeah rights!} songs. It turned out perfect and so many people think I actually wrote it!

Happy font finding y'all!

DIY Tip | Art of Negotiation

A dear friend of mine once told me anyone can negotiate, you just need to know how to play the game. They also referenced an hilarious episode of one of my favorite TV show's The Cosby Show {Dr. Huxtable and Theo go to into buy a new car}... if you haven't seen it watch it now.

I used these new-found skills and confidence to not only negotiate my new car but also when it comes to DIYing....well 'thriftying' that is.

As Dr. {well, Mr. in the clip} Huxtable says in the clip the price you see at thrift store is the 'Suggested Retail Price' - there is always room for negotation. Heck, they expected it.

Here is how I approach a 'thrifting' negotiation:
  1. When you find a piece inspect it well. Check and see if there is missing hardware, broken wood, cracked glass. Think how much work am I going to have to put into this before it is 'house ready'?
  2. Is it well made? Some pieces look like wood, but they aren't. Found that out the hard way. You cannot refinish fake wood. And hard to paint as well. Knock on it, you will know - weight is also a good indicator. If can't tell ask someone. They will know.
  3. If you are buying something that uses electricity. TEST IT! Nothing like buying a cool lamp and the dang thing doesn't work!
  4. Negotiation. If you find nothing wrong with the piece and fell like you can clean it up and make it sparkly again, ask for  20% off {start high}. See how they react. If they say no it is firm. Then decide if you really want it. If not, walk away. Many times they will chase you down and make a counter. If they counter, know the price in the back of your head that you will walk from. If they don't hit it WALK AWAY. Unless you LOVE, HAVE TO HAVE, WOULD DIE WITHOUT IT... walk away if you don't get your number.
  5. If you are buying multiple pieces at the same store, use that to your advantage. Negotiate as a whole. Think about it, you are moving large product for them. They need to get these things out and make room for new pieces.
  6. This is important. If they get hit your number, and you love the piece BUY IT! I promise you, someone else will. I once found a piece I LOVED...they hit my number and I wanted to think about it. FAIL. I called back 15 minutes later after I left the store and it was gone. As you can tell, it still fires me up!

With this is in mind PLEASE remember the following:
Always be honest and don't try to pull a fast one on the people working.
  1. They do this everyday.
  2. They are good people usually working for a good cause.
  3. There is a difference between getting a 'deal' and being cheap. Being cheap is tacky.

Sneak Peak...

Working on our first #DIYinaDay project. Here is a sneak peak...

Note: make sure to charge your drill before you start. 15 minute project is taking forever.

DIY TIP | Adding Life to Your Couch

If you are like me, when it comes to your couch it is one of the most expensive pieces you own. I could not find a way to DIY my own couch. After purchasing a beautiful new sectional, I learned like with anything in life it takes work to keep it looking good. So I am here to spread the news/secret of keeping your couch looking good and extending its life.

1. Once a week, YES once a week. Take all the cushions off your couch. I put them on the floor.
2. If you have a slip cover insure it is on properly and claim all the loose change and stale Cheerios - I have a 3 year old.
3. Fluff or in my case really beat each cushion moving the insides around.
4. Now this is the important part... Put them back in different places and rotate sides. If you sit in one section more often, switch that cushion with one less used. Remember the back pillows too!
5. Once you are done, pour yourself a glass of wine and pat yourself on the back for being awesome and taking care of your couch.
